REPORT J2J MEDIA WORKSHOP At New Delhi, On Feb. 11, 2011

Mr. Dhananjay Singh, National Co-ordinator, IMCFJ, started the session by welcoming each participant and explaining the main agenda of the journalist to journalist workshop. He said that the people who eat Gutkha have hundred percent chance of risk of Cancer. He added that to
save our society from Gutkha epidemic the production and sale of Gutkha must be banned immediately.
India's well-known journalist Alok Tomar appealed today for the workshop held on tobacco control and anti gutkha issues. He is suffering from throat cancer. In his appeal he requested to the people who are using tobacco to stop use of tobacco at the earliest. He said that he has been smoking cigarette for 23 years but could not feel the real taste of tobacco. He added that he kept on smoking until the doctors warned him that if he will not quit smoking he cannot live long. The
treatment used for Cancer disease is called Chemotherapy and this therapy is very expensive. Till now more than 20 lacs rupees has been spent for his treatment but his condition is still same.
Mr Jitendra Mishra, Convener, Tambakoo Virodhi Morcha(TVM) by expressing his views said that awareness, self – confidence, courage and friendly environment can be helpful for anyone wish to get rid of addiction of the epidemic. The way today's youth opens Gutkha pouch it seems that he is unaware about the invitation to the cancer.
Mr Zafar from PTI, Kanpur said that Gutkha is a dangerous poison and Kanpur is the main centre of production of Gutkha. In Kanpur it is being produced in every second lane. More than hundred units of Gutkha production are running there and at the rate of 160 to 200 pouches per
minute it is being produced. Through this we can imagine the giant face
of this enemy.
Mr U. G. Barman, President of North Bengal Press Club said that if you see the children living below poverty line you can find that consumption of Gutkha is more than the food among them.
IMCFJ President, Sri Ashutosh Singh said that the media should act responsibly and put forward the ill-effects of gutkha use to the readers from time to time. And gradually the readers will start taking the issue seriously.
Mr.Ashutosh Singh, President IMCFJ concluded the session by saying that the stories regarding Gutkha should be written in a different way, more impactful and based on live examples of people who have been victims of cancer.
